About Us
Action Art 3D is the gift shop of Lizard Fire Studios - a 3D animation studio in Austin, Texas. Lizard Fire is primarily myself, John Burch, although Suzann Kale provides professional voice overs, marketing content and very critical feedback on color, style and business. We are a team.
Animation has been my career for eight or nine years and I love the work. Before that, I was an electrical engineer. I finally decided to get out of the big corporations ( Dell, Texas instruments and Data General ) and start my own. I recommend that you learn how to be a business person BEFORE you start such a thing. It's not easy learning the fundamentals of business while you are starting a new business.
Unless otherwise noted, all artwork is copyright 2007 John Burch. Most of the 3D art is produced in our Animation studio. I give credit for the photos when appropriate. That info is on the catalog page for each clock.
How to Start a Business.
First, decide what you are going to exchange with the world. Everything you eat, use and consume in this world comes from other people and you only have two things to trade to get those things.
First is your time. When you get a job, you are exchanging 8 to 12 hours each day for money. You don't have any more time, so you will never make any more money than the basic salery.
And second, you can decide to sell something that you or someone else has produced. If it is your own product, hopefully you can produce them faster than if you had to make each one by hand. Otherwise, you are back to selling your time. So pick a product that can be sold an unlimited number of times for the limited amount of time you have to put into the product up front. For example, software takes a lot of time to produce, but then you can easily reproduce the software and sell it thousands of times.
In the end, you have to produce something that other people need or want. And you should find a way to do that at a low cost to you per sale. And remember, your time has a monetary value.
This is the fundamental thing you need to know: What is your product. Without this tied down and done right, you don't have much chance to be successful, even if you survive. It has to be something other people want, not necessarily what you want or are interested in. People think that since they like something they should open a shop selling that thing. Maybe they are the only person who finds that interesting. The shop will not survive unless a lot of people need what you are selling. Get that right before you open a shop or put up a website.
By the way, if you do want to start a business online, find a way to do it yourself before you risk your career, life savings and family stability on a new idea.
